Jacobean Theatre

marcjacobssatinmia.jpgIf all the crazy crap and carols haven’t given it away yet, you’d know we’re close to the holidays just because of all the holiday-themed purses that are popping up everywhere.

‘Holiday themed’ usually means kitsch with a vengeance — aggressively warm and happy and seasonal, lord love you.

Now this purse here from Marc Jacobs is a very good example. I’ll say right now that I like it very much — I adore satin. I especially adore purple satin. The problem with satin is that it’s not the most durable of materials, and can be very hard to clean once stained. This purse manages to sidestep that down point by being made mostly of leather with the satin as a nice, gentle covering. Just keep it away from your drink, ok?

I’m not sure what this purse is trying to be — it’s a very funny mix of delicacy and camp humour. Whatever it is, it works for me… and not just because I’ve put a complete ban on Scrooge-like snobbiness towards anything holiday-related this year.

May all your Thanksgivings be purple!

Too Sexy For My Purse

mjquilt.JPGWe rely on Marc Jacobs to give us sharp, sophisticated glamour and they haven’t let us down with this little beauty.

It’s an evening purse from the current collection — it’s a quilted gold purse with chain handle — absolutely no logos anywhere apart from a subtle little "Marc Jacobs" on the clasp — and the only way anyone is going to see that is if they are envying your purse or trying to steal it. The inside lining is a gorgeous mulberry-burgundyish colour suede — soft and sultry, just like the purse as a whole.

It’s just perfect for a very glam evening out — team it up with some high Chloe shoes and a short black dress for maximum impact.

Hot!

Amanda Huggenkiss

mj amanda.JPGThis purse is smiling at me. No seriously, it is. Just look at it. It’s smiling because it knows full well that anyone who so much as glances at it has to own it. Why? Because, like almost all Marc Jacobs purses, it’s so… grabbable… cool and sexy and almost too hip for the likes of you and me.

This purse is special. Almost every other ‘hot’ bag this season is made of leather and fur, but this little beauty — "Amanda" — is made of… have you guessed it?… denim.

It really is an absolute joy just to look at. A nice, strong, solid design that’s offset by the softness of its powdery-blue colour. It’s perfect for everyday wear and tear, can easily dress an outfit up or down, and thanks to the bags reassuring bulk it’s one of those purses that is a real comfort to have under your arm.

Nine out of ten on this one Marc — I’m taking away a wee point for not making this purse in more colours. Send me a free handbag and we’ll call it even, ‘k?

Pretty, And Witty, And Gay

mj.JPGI have seen few things sweeter this year than this purse from the Marc Jacobs fall collection - a violet velvet satchel with a purse clasp and python detailing.

I love it. It’s so gloriously Victorian: so ladylike, so pretty and feminine and frou-frou. I love the cute little clasp and roses on the sides, I love the velvety luxuriousness of it all. It looks soft enough to be used as a pillow, so dainty and frilly that your dreams are sure to be beautiful.

All it needs is a little scottish terrier puppy on a violet velvet leash to complete the effect…

Marc Jacobs, I salute you. I mean, I curtsey to you.

Mr Jacobs, I Presume

"I love that reaction of love or hate. It’s indifference that bores me to death." - Marc Jacobsmarcjacobs.jpeg

That right there is your perfect introduction to Marc Jacobs, and crucial to understanding his design concepts. Of all the new wave of designers, he is most famous for his bright, edgy, grungy-ish designs. Somehow, he manages to hit the right point each time.

The first thing I always look at with a Marc Jacobs purse is the number of pockets on it… he loves his pockets, and I love him for it because it keeps all the keys/phone/make up stuff in it’s place.

Then there’s colour… material… check out the purse up there. What colour would you call that? I bet whatever you say, your friend would say different, and their friend would say something different as well. It’s so much fun, and the design is always incredibly classy — while still keeping that unique edginess.

You could be the most well groomed New Yorker in the world and carry this bag with pride… its extremely feminine and youthfully girly… and there’s almost a schoolgirl satchel element to it, which is just adorable.

Clearly Marc Jacobs is another designer who ‘gets’ women. Lovely lovely lovely.
